This past week was a great week for our Athletic program here at USMMA! Both the Swimming & Diving and Wrestling programs had a team member qualify for the NCAA Championships, our Men’s Lacrosse team defeated arch-rival Coast Guard, two student-athletes earned ECAC weekly praise, Swim & Dive Coach Sean Tedesco was honored by the ASCA and the 2016 baseball schedule was revealed.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Professor in the Department of Marine Transportation, Capt. George E. Edenfield ‘79, served as technical advisor on education and training issues for the U.S. delegation to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Third Session of the Sub-Committee on the Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 3) meeting in London earlier this month.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., February 25, 2016 – Today Cookie Cafe, a much loved custom at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), hosted a special Cookie Cafe event to honor and remember USMMA alumnus, Steve Shultz, USMMA Class of '84, who was sailing as Chief Mate aboard the El Faro when she was lost during Hurricane Joaquin, last October.

In the spirit of celebrating Black History Month, the American Merchant Marine Museum is playing the film Salty Dog Blues: Merchant Marines of Color Fighting for Their Rightful Share, on a continuous loop in the media room.  The documentary is a frank look at the struggle for non-white merchant mariners to be recognized for their service during World War II and beyond.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., February 12, 2016 – Twelve midshipmen from Professor Brian Ackerman’s (KP ’90) Engineering Class, began the initial phase of a long-term overhaul of the main engine of the National Historic Landmark vessel, USLV-87/WAL-512 AKA the Lightship AMBROSE at New York City’s South Street Seaport Museum.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., February 10, 2016 -Today midshipmen, faculty, and staff came together for an Ash Wednesday Mass which was celebrated in the Mariners' Memorial Chapel. Ashes were distributed in observance of the beginning of Lent, a forty day period in which Christians prepare for Easter.
