Competitive Club Sports

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) sponsors a full program of Club Sports designed to complement its Varsity Intercollegiate sports. These interest-driven programs are essential for midshipmen, providing opportunities to develop and hone athletic skills, leadership, management, and teamwork, professional qualities that will benefit participants throughout their lives. The Competitive Club Sport Program promotes physical well-being, health, and fitness, while also serving individual interests through social and recreational opportunities.

The Department of Physical Education and Athletics (PE&A) directly offers three competitive club programs, while the Office of Student Activities hosts numerous other athletic clubs. The specific offerings for Rugby, Water Polo, Ice Hockey, and Pistol include:

Rugby

Rugby is one of the three primary competitive club programs offered by the PE&A. The Academy features both men's and women's groups. The Men's Rugby Football Club is a competitive team that plays in the Empire Conference at the Division I-AA level, and it is open to all midshipmen regardless of their prior experience. Meanwhile, the Women's Rugby Club serves as an interest group specifically focused on learning the sport.

Water Polo

Also operating as one of the PE&A's designated competitive club programs, the Water Polo Club Team represents USMMA by competing regionally against other programs.

Ice Hockey

Alongside Rugby and Water Polo, Ice Hockey completes the trio of competitive club programs officially offered by the PE&A. It provides midshipmen an outlet to participate in this sport at a competitive, non-varsity level.

Membership in all USMMA clubs, including these competitive sports, is open to all individuals regardless of background, race, sex, age, or prior experience level. By participating in these athletic clubs, midshipmen not only enhance their physical and mental skills but also contribute to the Academy's vibrant community life.
