KINGS POINT, N.Y., January 27, 2016 - Everyone loves a good sea story. This was apparent earlier this month when more than 50 midshipmen, faculty and staff gathered to discuss one story that seems to have eclipsed many others -  the true story of the sinking of the whaleship Essex in 1820.

The Academy’s new Commandant, Capt. David Sosa, USMS, emphasized that “people are at the center of everything we do” as he shared his philosophy and way forward with the Regiment of Midshipmen.

Members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s faculty and staff were recognized for their achievements in an awards ceremony, Monday. Deputy Maritime Administrator Mike Rodriguez ’79, and USMMA Superintendent Rear Adm. James A. Helis, USMS, presented the awards at a ceremony at Ackerman Auditorium attended by the Regiment of Midshipmen and the Academy’s staff and faculty.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., Jan. 12, 2016 - Rear Adm. Philip H. Greene, Jr., U.S. Navy, Retired, Class of ‘78, has accepted the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s invitation to serve as the Distinguished Alumnus Speaker during the Class of ‘16 Commencement Ceremony, to be held in June.

Superintendent, Rear Adm. James A. Helis, USMS, announced the news to the midshipmen, faculty and staff during a Town Hall meeting at Ackerman Auditorium, yesterday.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., Dec. 22, 2015 - The United States Merchant Marine Academy Regimental Band recently travelled to the National World War II Museum in New Orleans to participate in grand opening of three new exhibits.

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 18, 2015) – USMMA senior quarterback Matt McDaniels (Malverne, N.Y.) has been in Baja, Mexico, since Sunday as he was selected to play in the Tazón de Estrellas  representing Team Stars & Stripes – a 41-man roster made up of seniors from a total of 27 Division III institutions. McDaniels and the squad will square off against the CONADEIP All-Stars from the CONADEIP private universities in Mexico with the contest scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, Dec.

KINGS POINT, N.Y., Dec. 10, 2015 – Two U.S. Army Reserve vessels arrived at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and tied up at Mallory Pier last month. Over several days, U. S. Army Reserve leaders met with midshipmen and introduced them to the obligation-fulfilling career opportunities that are available to them as reservists aboard Army watercraft.

USMMA's tree is one of the tallest holiday displays in the United States. At 172 feet, the tree is comprised of 3000 linear feet of wire.  With one light per foot, the tree's 3000 lights are easily seen from Nassau, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan.

Six United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) midshipmen received scholarships at the annual Connie Awards luncheon at the Newark Club in Newark, N.J. on Monday.
