USMMA Kings Point Sailing - Actions not words!

USMMA Kings Point Sailing Team prepares for the 2021 ICSA Singlehanded National Championship at Salve Regina University, Newport RI
On The Way

Coach's Summary of the 2021 Singlehanded National Championship

Coach Rick Dominique gives us a summary of the Kings Point sailors' first of three National Championships this spring.

UPDATE FROM THE RACECOURSE - National Championship

Wind conditions today weren't exactly favorable for all our sailors, being mostly in the high teens and most of our sailors on the lighter side of the competitive weight range.  Carrson Pearce '21 is sailing well, just 1 point out of 4th place and 6 points ahead of 6th.

Carrter Pearce's scoreline took a hit when he capsized in race #1, but he's working his way back, still in the top ten.

Luke Welker is the lightest of our sailors, and was exhausted after a long day of 8 races where he may have worked the hardest of anyone on the course.

Freshman Dax Thompson is getting acclimated to college sailing by competing in this National Championship in just his first season.

Racing continues tomorrow at 9:00am for an additional 6 races.

In the extracurricular arena, the Varsity Intercollegiate Dinghy Sailing Team is the most decorated varsity team at the Academy. Kings Point sailors are accomplished competitors. The USMMA competes against colleges and universities throughout the United States, and is consistently ranked in the Top 20. The two-season sport runs from September through November and February through June.

In 2019, the Varsity Intercollegiate Dinghy Team participated in 40 regattas hosted 7 events.   The teams belong to Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA). MAISA covers the area between New York State and Virginia and includes the District of Columbia and parts of Canada.  Hundreds of sailors compete on more than forty teams that travel across the conference and the country.  Some of these teams are from the top sailing schools in the country:  Harvard, Yale, Brown, Georgetown, Dartmouth, Navy, Coast Guard, St. Mary's, Hobart & William Smith, Pennsylvania. plus local teams from Fordham and SUNY Maritime.

Brendan Feeney. Assistant Intercollegiate Dinghy Sailing Coach

The Dinghy Team is back on the water.  After a hiatus due to COVID 19, the team is hard at work preparing for the season.  They are gearing up for their first big regatta on Saturday and Sunday, April 17-18.  This event is the MAISA North National Qualifier and will be held at USMMA.  Teams expected to compete at this time are:  Hobart and William Smith Colleges, SUNY Maritime, SUNY Stony Brook and KP.  There may be more teams who sign-up by mid-April.

Head Coach Mike McBrien and Asst. Coach Brendan Feeney have been busy these past few month recruiting new dinghy sailors.  Their efforts will pay off once the season begins.

Both coaches and their teams look forward to getting back to normal racing.  Be sure to check back for a n update on their first big regatta (April 17-18) in many months!

To check out real-time results of College Sailing regattas, go to TECHSCOIRE at  To follow KP, use their listing of schools organized by ICSA Conference.  Each school’s participation is summarized by season.
