Alicia Maggard is a historian of the 19th c. United States with particular interests in political economy, technology, and the US in the world. Her research explores the interplay between state and corporate actors in effecting foreign policy, forging a global economy, and shaping military strategy. Her 2023 Enterprise & Society article on early Sino-U.S. trade was awarded the Business History Conference’s Mira Wilkins Prize for international business history, and her current book project explores the rise of American sea power in the Pacific during the transition to steam. She has previously taught at Auburn University and the Coastal & Ocean Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport Museum.
