USMMA Professor Honored with National American Chemical Society Award for Volunteer Service
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Dr. Ping Furlan, Professor of Chemistry at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, was awarded the 2026 Award for Volunteer Service to the American Chemical Society, recognizing three decades of exceptional outreach, mentorship, and service to the scientific community.
The award was presented on March 24, 2026, during the ACS National Awards Ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia, one of the society’s premier annual events honoring leaders in science and education.
Dr. Furlan was recognized for her sustained commitment to expanding access to science education and inspiring future generations through hands-on learning and mentorship. Her contributions include leading large-scale community outreach initiatives, organizing National Chemistry Week programs, and developing innovative educational tools such as a giant 3D Periodic Table. She has also mentored numerous students into leadership roles while championing inclusive and accessible STEM education.
"This recognition is deeply meaningful to me, as it reflects a lifelong commitment to chemistry, education, and community," said Dr. Furlan. "At Kings Point, it reflects the Academy’s dedication to developing caring, responsible, and capable leaders with a strong scientific foundation who will help advance the maritime industry. It also brings the Academy’s name into the world’s largest scientific community and highlights Kings Point’s important role in STEM, education, and leadership."
During the ceremony, the award was presented by ACS President Dr. Rigoberto Hernandez, Immediate Past President Dr. Dorothy J. Phillips, and President-Elect Dr. Christina Bodurow.
ACS was founded in New York City on April 6, 1876, so this recognition comes during ACS’s 150th anniversary year.
In addition to receiving this national recognition, Dr. Furlan serves as a Councilor for the ACS New York Local Section and participated in the ACS Council Meeting during the Spring 2026 National Meeting.
Dr. Furlan will continue her engagement with the ACS as an invited keynote speaker at the ChemLuminary Awards Ceremony during the ACS Fall 2026 National Meeting in Chicago, Illinois.
