Midshipmen Receive Third Term Awards

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 22, 2019 – On Monday, Rear Admiral Jack Buono, Superintendent, Dr. John Ballard, Academic Dean and Provost, and Captain Mike Stroud, Commandant of Midshipmen, along with Commander Paul Acquaro, Director of the Academic Center of Excellence presented Gold and Silver Stars to midshipmen demonstrating academic excellence during the third term of Academic Year 2018-2019.

Additionally, Captain Gene Albert, Head of the Department of Professional Development and Career Services joined the group to award Sea Year Ribbons to the Class of 2021 A-Split midshipmen who excelled during their Sea Year.

The awards are apportioned based on the following standards:

Gold Star: a QPA of at least 3.50 with no course failures in the term;

Silver Star: a QPA of at least 3.25 up to and including 3.49 with no course failures in the term.  

Sea Year Ribbons are awarded to those with:

QPA of at least 3.25 up to and including 3.49; no failing grades; above average (3.0) Shipboard Performance Evaluations, in PD&CS Shipboard Database at the time of the initial posting of Sea Project grades.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, N.Y, educates and graduates leaders of exemplary character who are inspired to serve the national security, marine transportation, and economic needs of the United States as licensed Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the Armed Forces. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Academy, which was established under the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, as the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1943. It is administered by the Maritime Administration under the auspices of the Department of Transportation.
