Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio to Celebrate Mass at USMMA on October 26


KINGS POINT, N.Y., October 20, 2025 — The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is honored to welcome The Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, who will celebrate Mass at the Mariners’ Memorial Chapel on Sunday, October 26 at 8:30 a.m. All members of the USMMA community are warmly invited to attend.

Archbishop Broglio currently serves as President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), a role he assumed in 2022. He previously served as Secretary of the Conference and has held leadership positions on numerous committees, including those on International Justice and Peace, Canonical Affairs and Church Governance, Religious Freedom, and Health Care.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1977 for the Diocese of Cleveland, Archbishop Broglio began his diplomatic service in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, serving in Ivory Coast, Paraguay, and later as Chief of Cabinet to Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Secretary of State to Saint Pope John Paul II. He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the Dominican Republic and Apostolic Delegate to Puerto Rico in 2001, and was ordained Archbishop by Pope John Paul II that same year.

In November 2007, he was named the fourth Archbishop of the Military Services, USA, where he continues to serve the spiritual needs of U.S. military personnel and their families worldwide.

Archbishop Broglio is also deeply engaged in Catholic education and ethics. He is a Trustee and the Chancellor of Catholic International University, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Catholic Bioethics Center, a member of the Board of Trustees for the Catholic University of America, and is Chairman of the Communications Committee for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.


His international honors include:

•            Commander of the National Order of Côte d’Ivoire

•            Commander of the Order of the Polar Star (Sweden)

•            Grand Cross of the Order of the Libertador San Martin (Argentina)

•            Knight Grand Cross of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St. George

•            And many others recognizing his global service and contributions to peace and diplomacy


All are welcome to take part in this special celebration of faith and fellowship, led by of the most distinguished leaders in the Catholic Church.


During this special Mass, Archbishop Broglio will offer a blessing for all midshipmen preparing to go to sea. Non-midshipman guests are kindly asked to sit toward the rear of the Chapel to accommodate the participating midshipmen. Uniformed personnel are expected to be in khakis.
