Board of Visitors - Mr. Kevin J. Walsh

Kevin Walsh graduated from Kings Point in 2005 with a B.S. in Marine Transportation. Upon graduation K-Sea Transportation employed him until 2008. During his time at K-Sea he was Chief Mate on a 600’ ATB carrying refined oil products to ports all across the East and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. In 2008 he began his five-year apprenticeship with the Sandy Hook Pilots. During this time he rode over 1,000 ships in and out of the New York harbor area. He holds a USCG 1st class Pilots License and over 20 pilotage endorsements for the waterways in and out of the Ports of New York and New Jersey. Kevin also Holds a USCG Second Mate’s License, a Master of Towing License, and is STCW ’17 compliant. Kevin has served on the Joint Board of Trustees of the Sandy Hook Pilots since January 2017.

In 2009 he graduated from the American Military University with an M.A. in Transportation and Logistics Management with a concentration in Transportation Security. He has also completed a Graduate Certificate from the U.S. Navy War College in Joint Professional Military Education.

Kevin has remained very active in the U.S. Navy reserve, serving in the Strategic Sealift Officer Program. Ranked as a Lieutenant Commander (O-4), he is currently attached to the Harbor Pilot Detachment where he has supported several U.S. Navy active duty harbor pilot groups including NAVSTA Mayport, JEB Little Creek, Yokosuka Japan, and in March of 2020, he is scheduled to serve in Rota, Spain for his annual training. Kevin continues to support the Strategic Sealift Officer Program as often as his schedule allows.

Kevin has also served on the Board of Directors of the Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association and Foundation (USMMAAAF) since October of 2017. The Board works as a nonprofit organization supporting the Academies needs and the needs of the Midshipmen. In October of 2019, Kevin received a U.S. Presidential Nomination from President Donald Trump to serve a two year term on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Board of Visitors (BOV). The Board of Visitors gives independent advice to the Department of Transportation and both the Executive and Legislative Branches of Federal Government on the Academy.

Originally from Point Pleasant, New Jersey, Kevin still resides in his hometown with his two children Willa (10), and Kingston (7).
