CAPT George Edenfield

Head, Department of Marine Transportation

CAPT George Edenfield was appointed the Head, Department of Marine Transportation at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in October 2010. Prior to this appointment, he also served as the Assistant Head of Department, Nautical Sciences Division at the Academy. He is an Associate Professor.

Edenfield, a 1979 USMMA graduate, has been a member of the faculty since 2003. After graduating from the USMMA, he worked ashore in cargo, port, terminal operations, and in labor relations. Prior to returning to Kings Point, Edenfield sailed and advanced his merchant marine license up to "Master of Steam and Motor Vessels of Any Gross Tons Upon Oceans" where he sailed as Master of a non-petroleum tanker. He also holds STCW certifications as a Tankerman – Person-in-Charge (PIC), Medical Person-in-Charge (PIC), and for Fast Rescue Boats. He has a Federal Communications Commission License as a Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Radio Operator/Maintainer with a Ship Radar Endorsement. He continues to sail actively on his licenses while at the Academy on sea trials of new vessels built by the General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) Shipyard of San Diego, CA.

He has taught courses in Terrestrial Navigation, Celestial Navigation, Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), Introduction to Maritime Professional Studies, ECDIS, and Tankship Operations-Dangerous Liquids. At the Academy, he has also been very involved in the areas of maritime regulations and the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for Seafarers.

CAPT Edenfield and his wife, Eileen, live in Baiting Hollow, NY and are the proud parents of four children.
