USMMA Science Club Participates in NYACS Earth Day Event

USMMA Science Club - Earth Day 2026

KINGS POINT, N.Y., May 1, 2026—The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Science Club participated in the 13th Annual New York American Chemical Society (NYACS) Chemists Celebrate Earth Week event, “Into the Woods with Chemistry,” on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at the Jones Beach Energy & Nature Center.

The Earth Day celebration featured theme‑based presentations, an introduction to the Energy & Nature Center, a self‑guided beach and preserve walk, Chemistry Bingo, refreshments, Earth Day gifts, and hands‑on activities designed to engage community members of all ages.

At USMMA Science Club's station, attendees created leaf‑print bookmarks using sunlight/UV‑sensitive paper. By arranging leaves and other plant‑derived materials on the paper, exposing it to ultraviolet light, and rinsing it with water, participants revealed blue‑and‑white images. The activity illustrated how UV light can drive a chemical reaction between water‑soluble iron compounds to produce the insoluble blue pigment Prussian Blue, connecting chemistry with art and encouraging an appreciation for trees, forests, and the natural environment.

USMMA student and faculty volunteers included Meredith Elwood, Sakura Lopez, Alexander Furlan, Dr. Pamela Bryant, and Dr. Ping Furlan.

“On behalf of the Science Club, I sincerely thank New York ACS, Dr. JaimeLee Rizzo, and the Pace University students for their hospitality, hard work, and leadership in organizing this meaningful community event,” said Dr. Ping Furlan, Professor of Chemistry and Science Club Advisor. “We are also grateful to the Energy and Nature Center staff and Pace student clubs for their engaging presentations, as well as the refreshments, games, gifts, and beach walk that made the experience especially enjoyable for our students.”

"I would also like to thank our USMMA volunteers—Meredith Elwood, Sakura Lopez, Alexander Furlan, and Dr. Pamela Bryant—for representing the Academy and the Science Club so well,” added Dr. Furlan. “We are proud to have been part of this wonderful Earth Week celebration and to have contributed to its success.”

USMMA students valued the opportunity to engage with the community, collaborate with fellow scientists and educators, and celebrate Earth Day through chemistry, nature, and service.
