Position Information: This is a Full time Faculty Tenure-Track appointment in the Federal Service, with an initial term not-to-exceed 6/23/2018. Reappointments to additional one or two year terms are possible. If tenure is achieved (after four to six years), employent will be made permanent, provided a satisfactory performance appraisal is received annually. Job Summary: The position is that of the Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine Transportation, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. The Academy is a degree granting institution fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Upon graduation, the Midshipmen (male and female) are awarded Bachelor of Science degrees, licensed as Merchant Marine Officers by the U.S. Coast Guard and are commissioned as Officers in the U.S. Reserves or Active Duty Military Service. Located on the North Shore of Long Island in Western Nassau County, it is one of the world’s foremost institutions in the field of maritime education and consists of 82 acres of waterfront land including a Museum, library and fitness/recreational facilities available to both faculty and staff. Major Duties:
As an Assistant Professor you will be responsible for the development and conduct of educational courses and programs within the department, in particular teaching classes in Nautical Science. You will be responsible for academic mentoring of Midshipmen, carrying out research and scholarly activities and assuming a share of departmental and institutional service activities.

Qualifications Required:

To qualify for this position, you must meet the Educational, Licensure and Specialized Experience requirements listed below.
Minimum Educational Requirements:
To qualify for a Marine Transportation (Assistant Professor/Nautical Science) position you must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Marine Transportation or a related field.
Examples of related fields include, but are not limited to: Logistics/Supply Chain Management, Naval Architecture, Maritime Operations and Technology, Nautical Science (Safety of Life at Sea, Terrestrial and/or Celestial navigation, RADAR/Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA), Electronic Navigation, Seamanship, Maritime Communication, Firefighting (Marine), etc.), Marine Environmental Science (Meteorology, Oceanography, etc.).
Specialized Experience Requirements:
A minimum of 1 academic year of experience teaching Marine Transportation or Nautical Science at an accredited college/university. Management experience in the shoreside marine transportation industry or sailing experience may be substituted for teaching experience.
Licensure/Credential Requirements:
Applicants must have a current (not expired) U.S. Coast Guard License (or equivalent credential) valid for service on United States Flag Commercial Ships as a Chief Mate, Unlimited Tonnage, or higher and a valid credential issued under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1978, as amended; Federal Communications Commission (FCC) STCW endorsed for Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) operator is required.
Highly Desirable Skills/Experiences:
- Sailing experience as Master, unlimited tonnage, upon oceans or
- USCG (US Coast Guard) licensure and experience as a pilot or
- USCG (US Coast Guard) license (current) as Master of Towing Vessels with sailing experience or
- Sailing experience as Master of Articulated Tug-Barge (ATBs) units or
- Sailing experience with Polar Navigation or ice seamanship or
- USCG Designated Examiner for TOAR (Towing Officer Assessment Record) or
- Certification and experience with ECDIS or
- Certification and experience as a Dynamic Positioning Officer (DPO) or
- Liquefied Gas experience as a Liquefied Gas-Person in Charge (LG-PIC) or
- Tankerman PIC (Person in Charge) for hazardous liquid cargo in bulk or
- NIMS/ICS (National Incident Management System/Incident Command System) formalized training with certification and/or operational experience or
- Vessel, company and/or facility security officer certification and operational experience or
- Relevant operational leadership experience in the Uniformed Services of the United States or
- Simulation based teaching experience at a USCG recognized simulator training facility/institution or
- Traditional teaching experience at a USCG recognized Maritime Academy or,
- Shore-side managerial experience related to ship operations, management and/or administration or
- FCC GMDSS maintainer license.
