USMMA Kicks Off Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

KINGS POINT, NY – Apr. 3, 2017 –Today marks the official start National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAM) at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA).

During a lunchtime presentation, Rear Admiral Susan L. Dunlap, Deputy Superintendent, invited midshipmen, faculty and staff to participate in the many events that will take place during the month of April.  “Together, we can stop sexual violence before it has a chance to happen. It is possible to create a community where everyone is treated with respect and equality,” said Dunlap.

USMMA Midshipmen Deliver Holiday Joy

KINGS POINT, N.Y., December 22, 2016 – Just before leaving the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) for Winter Break, Plebe Glascock and Plebe Grabiak delivered 184 toys to the Toys for Tots program at the US Marine Corps, 1st Marine Corps District, Eastern Recruiting Region in Garden City, New York.

Academy's Torah Scrolls Rededication Links Generations of Jewish Midshipmen

KINGS POINT, N.Y., November 2, 2015 – Three Torah scrolls from the Mariners’  Memorial Chapel at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., were rededicated in a Friday Evening Jewish Sabbath service, bringing together Jewish alumni and current midshipmen during this year’s Homecoming weekend.

Alex Rosenberg, class of 1969, organized the service together with the Academy’s Advisor to the Jewish Midshipmen Club, Dr. Michael Melcer, following a tradition to hold a Jewish worship service as part of Homecoming Weekend every five years.

Class of 2019 Joins the Regiment of Midshipmen and U.S. Navy Reserve on Acceptance Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y., August 11, 2015 – On Saturday, The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point welcomed 243 “plebe candidates” of the Class of 2019 into the Regiment of Midshipmen as they took USMMA’s Corps of Cadets Oath administrated by Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Ph.D., Superintendent of USMMA, during the Acceptance Day Ceremony and Parade. They were then sworn in as midshipmen in the U.S. Navy Reserve by Rear Admiral Mark R, Whitney, Deputy Commander, Logistics, Maintenance and Industrial Operations Naval Sea Systems Command.
