KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct 18, 2016) - Midshipmen had a break from the rigors of regimental life to watch Comedian Mo Mandel at 2000 in the Ackerman Auditorium. The midshipmen we treated to a live performance with an opener from New York City comic, Chris Millhouse and then a full set from Mandel who came to campus from Los Angeles at the request of the Campus Activities Board. For many midshipmen, this was the first time they have been able to see a comic in person so it was a new experience which, throughout the show, was often edgy. Plebe Hayden Coyne stated, "it was great. This is something we need to do more of." Conye was one of almost 200 midshipmen, staff, and faculty in attendance.
Mo Mandel was the hard partying host of truTV’s Barmagetton and is currently the creator and executive producer of the networks newest hit show Comedy Knockout, a comedy competition show that Mo created and then promptly lost on two consecutive times. As a stand-up comedian Mandel has made numerous appearances on CONAN, CHELSEA LATELY, CRAIG FERGUSON, and has a very highly rated half hour special playing in rotation on COMEDY CENTRAL. As an actor Mandel has appeared on such hit shows as MODERN FAMILY, CASTLE, and HAPPY ENDINGS, and stared opposite Hank Azaria in FREE AGENTS on NBC. When Mandel is not telling jokes, or hosting, or being a high level thespian, he is often writing television pilots, which he has done for, WARNER BROS, NBC, FOX, FX, FXX and THE DISNEY CHANNEL. Mandel will have a one hour stand-up Special “NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT” on SEESO.COM starting Nov 3rd.
The overall event was planned by Midshipman 3/C Brian Rainwater, a Department Head on the Campus Activities Board. Rainwater researched and then focus grouped comics with the board and narrowed down the selection to Mr. Mandel. Rainwater then provided leadership to the group's planning team and managed the event from start to finish. "It was a great experience. You can read about planning an event such as this, but to carry it out yourself gives you real experience. No matter how hard you plan, you still need to be able to think on your feet." The Campus Activities Board is a group of midshipmen made up of all years who work together as equal members to take turns providing several types of entertainment and cultural events for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Community. One of the goals of this board is provide midshipmen with concrete leadership building experiences and resume accomplishments while providing a valuable service to the Academy community.
