In addition to the Master and Chief Engineer, the permanent officers on board the training ship consist of a mate and two assistant engineers. These officers oversee the daily program on board. They assign cadets tasks, perform maintenance and repair, and keep the ship safe and looking good. The permanent mate supervises the deck cadets on a day to day basis. This mate stands a navigation watch while underway as well as instructs deck students in professional subjects in a laboratory environment on board. The permanent assistant engineers supervise the engine cadets and accomplish the maintenance and repair of all the machinery on board. While underway, these engineers stand watch and supervise the cadets in maintenance and repair. They also instruct the engine cadets in professional subjects in a laboratory environment on board.
