The USMMA Varsity Intercollegiate Sailing Team is the most decorated team on campus, with thirteen Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) national championships to its credit, as well as nearly two dozen district titles. These are our most coveted awards. With the advantage of having extensive waterfront facilities on campus, the Academy has been home to some terrific teams throughout the program's history. The Mariners have excelled in intercollegiate competition for over fifty years. An early member of the Mid-Atlantic district, Kings Point fielded outstanding teams in 1950, 1954, 1963-1964, 1970-1972, 1978-1987, 1996-1998. While the Team won several district championships in its early years, it was not until 1979 that the Mariners won their first National (now "North American") title. The Teams of the 1979 through 1987 stand out, with the four dinghy championships in 1979, 1983, 1984, and 1987. During these years, the program included such talents as Alex Smigelski '79, Olympic Silver Medallist Morgan Reeser '84, and Jay Renehan '85. All three sailors were named College Sailors of the Year and Smigelski, Reeser and Renehan are now members of the USMMA Athletic Hall of Fame.
