| ABOUT DOTTIE J. | ||
True, even when the fish aren't biting, the crew of Dottie J is continously rewarded by the experiences spent on the water. Small vessel operation, leadership, teamwork and pride are our principle virtues as an integral part of the Kings Point waterfront. Each season a crew is assembled and vessel preparation begins, and once the boat is sparkling, we commence to cover her decks with fish guts! Dottie J is the flagship fishing vessel of the Academy as well as one of the most efficient training platforms the Academy has to offer. She embarks on distant voyages in search of fish and knowledge. The crew of Dottie is a tightly wound group of midshipmen that work together in tournaments, race committees, VIP cruises and just about anything else that comes our way. Unity starts from the get-go as we work together cleaning and maintaining Dottie each day. You can find Dottie J and her crew nearly every day on the waters of Long Island Sound in pursuit of the illustrious stripped bass. In the past we have had considerable success with our prey including fish over 30 pounds. The best part fishing the sound is the fact that when the bass aren't iting, the bluefish are. Each fall we take part in the annual WIC bluefish trounament and each year we fair just a little bit better. We also try and experiment with foreign waters out east and from time to time hit the blue water for the big boys. If you like to fish and you are willing to learn, Dottie J is an excellent way to unwind from a hectic day at the Academy. We teach the basics of seamanship, ship-handling, navigation, maintenance and safety to all our members in addition to small unit leadership. Come down and enjoy the sun, we'd love to have you! |
