2005 FIRST CLASS DINING IN

The 19th Annual First Class Dining In was held in the Babson All American Room of the Yocum Sailing Center on Friday, 20 May 2005. We were honored to have three flag officers in attendance: Vice Admiral Joseph D. Stewart, USMMA Superintendent; Rear Admiral Christopher McMahon '77, Special Assistant to Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta; and, Rear Admiral (Select) Buz Buzby '79, US Navy. Other special guests included Mrs. Joanne O'Neil and Mrs. Jackie O’Neil Boutin, wife and daughter of the late Dave O’Neil ’61; Captain Chris Gasiorek '95 and Mate Jeff Miller '04, crew of the TV HERCULES; Mr. Matt Spears '92, Mr. Chris Moore '94, and Mr. Hugh Grandstaff '04.

Several awards were presented during the evening, recognizing the special achievements of our midshipmen and staff.

Mr. Robert W. Asma was honored for his outstanding service while Power Vessel Program Manager from 1997-2005.
The 2005 Watchstander’s Award, recognizing the member of the Varsity Offshore Sailing Team with the greatest number of miles underway, was presented to MIDN John C. Phelan, 1/c (Tivoli, NY).
The 2005 B-Split Award, which recognizes the most accomplished B-Split sailor on the Varsity Offshore Sailing Team, was presented to MIDN James M. Schade, 1/c (Enterprise, OR).
The 2005 “Find A Way” Award, which recognizes an individual on the Waterfront who showed initiative and perseverance to develop a new program, was presented to MIDN Carl P. Erickson, 1/c (Quincy, WA), for his work in establishing the Waterskiing and Wakeboarding Club.
The 2005 Technology Award, which recognizes an individual on the Waterfront who promoted the use of technology to improve program operations, was presented to MIDN Christopher C. Peifer, 1/c (Billings, MT), for his work in upgrading the Waterfront website.
A Class of 2005 Achievement Award was presented to MIDN Wm. Austin Howell, 1/c (Pascagoula, MS), for his achievements as a member of the Varsity Intercollegiate and Varsity Sailing Teams, including winning two national championships.
A Class of 2005 Achievement Award was presented to MIDN Glenn A. Atherton, 1/c (Fishkill, NY), for his achievements as two-term Midshipman Master of the TV KINGS POINTER, and service as skipper of S/V AVALANCHE.
A Class of 2005 Achievement Award was presented to MIDN Lindsay M. Elgart, 1/c (Red Bank, NJ), for her achievements as team captain and four-year varsity letter-winner of the Kings Point Varsity Crew.
The 2005 Admiral Randall Trophy, recognizing an individual who has contributed significantly to the success of the Varsity Intercollegiate Sailing Team, was presented to MIDN Peter R. Young, 1/c (Madison, CT), for his achievements as team captain and four-year varsity letter-winner.
The 2005 David A. O’Neil Memorial Award, recognizing an individual who has contributed significantly to the success of the Kings Point Varsity Sailing program, was presented to MIDN Peeter H. Must, 1/c (Toms River, NJ), for his achievements as a member of the Varsity Intercollegiate and Varsity Sailing Teams, including winning two national championships. The inaugural presentation of the award was made by Mrs. Joanne O’Neil and Mrs. Jackie O’Neil Boutin.
The 2005 Jack Sussi Memorial Trophy, recognizing an individual who has contributed significantly to the success of the Kings Point Waterfront program, was presented to MIDN Brian N. Griffin, 1/c (Baltimore, MD), for his achievements as a two-term Regimental Waterfront Officer, skipper of MV STORM, and four-year member of the Power Squadron.
