The Way of the Ship: America's Maritime History Reenvisioned, 1600-2000
by Alex Roland, W. Jeffrey Bolster, and Alexander Keyssar

John Wiley & Sons, Publishers.
ISBN: 978-0-470-13601-0

In this engaging account of American maritime and merchant marine history from colonial days to the present, the esteemed authors show that from 1820 on, domestic shipping on America’s coasts, rivers, and lakes outweighed shipping overseas, and that shipping drove the American economic engine and helped shape American history. Part of a series sponsored by the American Maritime History Project, Inc., this book is essential reading for American and naval history buffs.

The prestigious team of writers/historians includes Alex Roland (Durham, NC), Professor of History at Duke University, Jeffrey W. Bolster (Barrington, NH), Professor of History at the University of New Hampshire, and Alexander Keyssar (Cambridge, MA), Stirling Professor of History and Social Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. All have authored acclaimed books.

Since 1943 the United States Merchant Marine Academy has successfully fulfilled its mission of educating our country's brightest leaders, instilling in them the belief that actions speak louder than words.
Plato stated that credence as, "Be direct in your speech, still more in your actions. Words are evanescent, but deeds will endure forever."
True to the United States Merchant Marine Academy motto, "Acta non verba," the words in this text are few. The 129 photographs of academy life and experiences speak more memorably than words.
Much of this book shows Kings Point as the insiders know it. From indoc training to lunch muster outside the mess hall, from recognition night to the engineering machine shop, the reader gets a brief glimpse of life inside the academy gates.
For the family and friends it is a chance to see what they may not have experienced. For midshipmen and alumni, it is an opportunity to remember past challenges, successes and memories.
Academy life is a collage of action, movement, color and shadow, that need not be explained with words. May this book serve as a way to "Tell America" about the academy where Kings Pointers daily learn and live the "acta non verba" ethic.

Fundraising Training for Parents

Mona Engvig has an idea for a fundraising opportunity for parent associations.  She helps people create photo-safe albums/scrapbooks in her spare time and recently helped raise about $200 for the Southern California Chapter of the Parents' Association.

She has put together a package of USMMA material, various maritime stickers and decorative items, a photo-safe pen, and a beautiful 12 by 12 dark blue album. You can view the album etc. at http://www.creativememories.com.  They charged $50, which included a workshop. Workshops might not always be possible with people all over the country (world?), but she could include some info, and pay for the mailing of the albums. Ten dollars from each album sale can go back to the USMMA, the Alumni organization or to the Parents' Association. Parents or others are encouraged by Mrs. Engvig to get together and make the albums. The Southern California parents made albums for their sons and daughters at the Academy, and they hope to have a group meeting regularly to work on their albums. This is also a very meaningful activity in these difficult times for our country.

If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Engvig at monaengvig@earthlink.net.  Mrs. Engvig is the parent of Tormod, class of 2005.

We offer a variety of casual shirts as shown here and on our web site (link below). All shirts come in white or navy and have Embroidered Lettering; available in "USMMA/Kings Point"; "USMMA/Parent" or "USMMA/Grandparent" (golf shirt only)

Since we are privileged to have our meetings at Land Hall on the Academy grounds, we open most of our social functions to the ENTIRE REGIMENT.   For example, in October we have a "Plebe Treat Night" to which only Plebes are invited -- ALL the Plebes, not only New York Plebes. Desserts and soda (pop) are supplied; in December we have our annual Holiday Party with hot and cold foods and desserts, presents are raffled off (for free) to all the midshipmen, holiday music is played and a general good time is had by all (in 2002 we served more than 400 midshipmen!); in the Spring we have an "Ice Cream Social" with make-your-own-sundaes and during final exams each trimester, we supply refreshments to help the study process -- one year we arranged for an ice cream truck to distribute a variety of ice creams to all the midshipmen; at other times we have supplied Italian ices and brownies and donuts with milk. This would not be possible without the sale of our shirts.

Shipping and handling: $4.00 per order.
