The Regiment of Midshipmen
The purpose of the USMMA Regimental Program
is fourfold:
- To function as a leadership laboratory, where growing
leaders may learn, often by trial and error, the techniques
that are required of leaders, from ensigns in the Naval
Reserve to CEOs of large corporations.
- Experience has shown that learning by doing is the
most effective means of education. By thrusting Midshipmen
into leadership roles, they may experience the thrills
and burdens of leading people first hand, which is not
available at most other colleges.
- By having a Regimental framework and expecting Midshipmen
to live up to a higher standard, the system instills
self discipline.
- Finally, one cannot lead alone. By defining smaller
units within the whole and encouraging teamwork within
and between these groups, the four years at Kings Point
are not only an outstanding individual leadership education,
but a lesson in team building.
The Regiment is not the only place leadership
is taught at Kings Point, but it is the most extensive.
