Glossary of Terms

Any family member or friend of a candidate is going to need to quickly get adjusted to the copious amounts of jargon that is used at Kings Point. The following is a list of common Midshipman Officer acronyms as well as military and nautical terminology.

Common Midshipman Officer Acronyms:

The most common acronyms you are likely to hear appear below, sorted in relative order from lowest to highest rank.

CTO – Company Training Officer
CHRTO – Company Human Relations Training Officer
CHBC – Company Honor Board Chairman
CAO – Company Academic Officer
CFO - Company Fitness Officer
PC – Platoon Commander
CX – Company Executive Officer
CC – Company Commander
BAO – Battalion Academic Officer
BADJ – Battalion Adjutant
BLOG – Battalion Logistics Officer
BX – Battalion Executive Officer

BC – Battalion Commander
RAD – Regimental Athletic Director
RAO – Regimental Academic Officer
RHBC – Regimental Honor Board Chairman
RLOG – Regimental Logistics Officer
RADJ – Regimental Adjutant
RPA - Regimental Public Affairs Officer
RWO – Regimental Waterfront Officer
ROPS – Regimental Operations Officer
RX – Regimental Executive Officer
RC – Regimental Commander

RITO - Regimental Information and Technology Officer

Common Terminology:

1st Class: Seniors
2nd Class: Juniors
3rd Class: Sophomores
4th Class: Freshmen
Acceptance Day: The Saturday of Parents Weekend. Plebe Candidates are accepted into the Regiment
Bearings Book: a small blue book containing all the "plebe knowledge" a student must learn as part of their regimental training.
It helps promote attention to details.  
(e.g.  The Flagpole is made of hydraulically swaged steel, is 172 feet above ground, 10 feet below ground, and sits in a 10 foot by 10 foot by 12 foot slab of concrete, etc.)
Candidate: a Freshman going through Indoctrination
Colors: Daily Ceremonies for raising and lowering the flag
Company: A smaller organizational unit of the Regiment.  they are 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th, and Band
Deck: 1.A Major that involves taking the U.S. Coast Guard Deck Officer Examination to become a 3rd Mate
2. A floor in a building
D.I.: Drill Instructor.  An almost un-human like being that commands and monitors a candidates every move.  They seem intimidating at first but are realized later to be leaders that instill pride and motivation in one's self.  They serve as the examples and instructors for Regimental Training during Indoctrination.
Drill: Marching in formation, usually with rifles
Engine: A Major that involves taking the U.S. Coast Guard Engineering Officer Examination to become a 3rd Assistant Engineer
Ensign: 1. U.S. Flag
2. Lowest Level Commissioned Officer
Grinder: The large blacktop area in front Delano Hall (mess hall)
Guide: Person carrying the guidon
Guidon: A company flag on a staff.  This usually leads a company behind a Commander
Head: Bathroom
Honor Code:

A Midshipmen will not Lie, Cheat or Steal.  This code is to be adhered to at all times by all midshipmen
I.T.: Incentive Training.  Used for those who need extra motivation to complete a required task. (usually involves P.T.)
Indoctrination / "Indoc": The two week period used to train and prepare a midshipman for life at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
K.P.: Kings Point, - The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
Ladder: Stairway
Mess Hall / Delano Hall: This is where the Midshipmen eat their meals
Midshipman/Midshipmen: Student/Students
Oval / Powell Oval: The large oval path in front of Wiley Hall.  Plebe Candidates are not permitted to walk in this area.
P.K.T.: Plebe Knowledge Test - A test of various subjects in the bearings book.
Plebe: a Freshman between Acceptance Day and Recognition
Plebe Candidate: A Freshman between Indoctrination and Acceptance Day
Plebe Gear: All the items a Plebe/Plebe Candidate must carry on his/her person at all times.  This promotes responsibility and attention to detail.
P.T.: Physical Training - Stretches, Pushups, Running, etc.
Rack: Bed, usually a bunk
Regiment: The entire student body
Recognition: When the First Class officially recognizes the Plebes as part of the regiment.  The steps to become 4th Classmen
Squad:  a smaller group inside the company usually a rank or column in a formation
Tattoo: A company review session usually at the end of the day for Plebe/Plebe Candidates/Candidates to evaluate the past day and prepare for the upcoming one.  This is usually held by a D.I. or a Midshipman Officer
Tuck: a way to make a shirt have a fitted look by folding the back of the shirt in a specific way
Watch: A duty station which a person is given for a set amount of time usually 4 hours (1 hour during indoc). The duties usually involve "keeping a watch" over what is occurring in a particular area and logging all activity.  During indoctrination a "Fire Watch" is held during the night to teach watch-standing skills and logbook entries.
