Captain Robert G. Allee
Commandant of Midshipmen

Captain Robert G. Allee was appointed the fifteenth Commandant of Midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on July 27, 2003. In this post, he develops leaders of integrity for the seagoing merchant marine, the armed forces and the marine transportation industry.

Since June 1999, Captain Allee had served as Associate Professor of Marine Transportation and Master of the Training Vessel KINGS POINTER. Prior to joining the USMMA faculty, Captain Allee had a distinguished thirty-one year career in the United States Navy and Merchant Marine. Upon graduating from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1968, Captain Allee shipped out as a deck officer aboard a variety of cargo and research vessels during the Vietnam conflict. In 1971, he was called to active duty as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. During his naval career, he commanded USS DECATUR (DDG-31), USS TRIPPE (FF-1075), Maritime Prepositioning Ships Squadron TWO, and had a number of shore side tours.

Captain Allee served as the Sealift Commander during the initial U.S. operations in support of the 1992-1993 United nations peacekeeping mission in Somalia, overseeing in excess of 200 U.S. and Allied naval and commercial ships. His last assignment was as Deputy Director of Logistics Plans and Policy on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. Upon retirement from the Navy in 1994, Captain Allee served as General Manager at two Federal Marine Terminals, located in Albany, New York and Cleveland, Ohio respectively.

Captain Allee holds a Bachelor’s Degree from USMMA and a Master’s Degree in Computer Systems Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit (two awards), the Defense Meritorious Medal, the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, The Maritime Service Superior Performance Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), and various other unit and campaign awards.

A native of Fort Scott, Kansas, Captain Allee is married to the former Toni Marquit. Captain Allee holds a USCG Unlimited Master’s license and a commission as a Captain in the United States Maritime Service.
