The Lenovo laptop includes the latest Intel Duo Core T2300 processor operating at 1.66 ghz, 1 gb of memory, 80 gb hard drive,
optical drive, wired ethernet port operating at 100 mbps, wireless 802.11abg, three years of warranty and accidental
protection with next business day service, and Microsoft XP Professional at the latest release levels. Engineering majors will
also receive MATLAB and AutoCAD software later in the academic year.
Through years of experience administering its mandatory laptop program, the Academy recognizes that a laptop will offer
three years of use. At the beginning of the midshipman's first class, or senior year, each midshipman will be required
to purchase a second laptop with three years of warranty and accidental protection with next business day service. This
second laptop will provide good service for two years following the completion of a four year degree program. The
second laptop is projected to cost less than $1,000.
Both laptops, printer, flash drive, and web camera are the property of the midshipman. The Microsoft operating system is
also the property of the midshipman. The Microsoft Office, MATLAB, and AutoCAD software are the property of the Academy
and may be used by the midshipman
only
while s/he is a student in good standing at the Academy.
Academy Network
The Academy operates a high bandwidth, high reliability fiber network on campus. Each building is served by a state-of-the-art
network switch with 3 gbps of bandwidth. By the end of 2006, this speed will be increased ten-fold to 30 gbps. During summer and
fall 2006, the Academy will deploy wireless access throughout the campus which will augment wireless access currently
available throughout the athletic complex, Bland Library, Sea Farer Restaraunt, and the paved area known as the Grinder.
The Academy network provides high bandwidth access to the Internet via a 100 mbps connection, and by the end of 2006, 15 mbps
to Internet2, a consortium of research institutions and organizations.
Academy Network Services
The Academy network is highly automated. Software is automatically distributed, installed, and updated via the network as are
virus and spyware definitions.
Each midshipman is provided unlimited network file storage, an email account, access to popular instant messaging services,
and
Skype.
Skype supports free teleconferencing for participants using Skype over a broadband connection, and supports up to four
parties in a single teleconference. Skype also supports two-way videoconferencing.
The largest email must not exceed 75 mb including attachments. There is no limit on the size of a midshipman email account.
However, after 30 days all email is deleted from the email server, unless the sender's email address ends in .edu, .gov, or .mil.
Effective in July 2006, faculty, staff, and midshipmen may not use third party email services, like AOL, MSN, Hotmail, GMail,
and others through web mail sites. Academy issued email accounts can be used for both official and personal communication.
Computer Network User Agreement
All Academy computer and network users are bound by the
Computer Network User Agreement
This agreement restricts the software you install on your laptop, and your conduct when using the Academy network. It is
important to understand that no network user can expect privacy in their email and instant messaging exchanges. Copies of
each are archived, and these communications may be reviewed by the Commandant, Deputy Superintendent, or Superintendent
should an allegation of improper conduct be alleged. All midshipmen are provided a copy of the
Computer Network User Agreement
during Indoctrination.
Additional Services
The Academy provides support services for each midshipman that are included in the technology fee paid for laptop purchases.
If a midshipman experiences a laptop hardware, software, or other failure, s/he may drop off the laptop for diagnosis and
repair at the Service Center located on the zero deck of Samuels Hall. At the Service Center, the midshipman will receive
a loaner laptop that can be used until repairs and testing are completed.
Loaner laptops are also provided during Sea Year. When notified a laptop has failed, Service Center staff will ship a loaner
laptop to the midshipman's next port of call. The midshipman will ship the failed laptop to the Service Center for repair.
When repairs are completed and tested, the repaired laptop is shipped back to the midshipman, and the midshipman ships back
the loaner laptop.
All shipping costs are paid by the Academy.
