The technical nature of the USMMA curriculum,
and the fields of engineering and transportation/logistics
in general, are particularly suited to the use of computers
as both teaching aids and problem solving tools. Many courses
in all areas of the curriculum involve computer applications.
The integration of computers in the curriculum is achieved
through the use of computer laboratories, wired and wireless
electronic class rooms, state of the art simulators, and
personal computers.
All midshipmen are required to purchase
a personal computer from the Academy (at cost). The purchase
price includes software selected by the Academy for broad
application in all aspects of the curriculum. It is a requirement
that this issued computer be maintained while enrolled at
the Academy. A computer service center is available on Academy
grounds for all midshipmen computing service issues.
Every room in the
midshipmen dormitory complex is connected to the USMMA Network.
This local area network utilizes a fiber-optic backbone
that spans the entire campus linking over 2,000 active computers
in the academic, administrative and midshipmen areas. The
network provides access to the Internet, electronic mail,
e-learning, bulletin board services, laser printers, simulation
software, and additional application software. Midshipmen
arrive at the Academy with varying degrees of experience
with computers and their application in the learning process.
To ensure that all midshipmen become computer literate,
computer courses are included as part of the core curriculum. |
