Administration
and Services
Nearly
one-third of the Academy's staff serves in an administrative,
service, or support role. From the Office of Public
Safety, to the Department of Maintenance and Repair, members
of the non-academic staff are vital in ensuring the efficient
and effective delivery of services. This section provides
general information on the different programs and resources
that help.
To
gain an appreciation of the unique
character of the United States Merchant Marine Academy,
consider the following "formula". First,
establish an undergraduate college, with its core academic
and support needs. Next, assign the supervision of
that college to a modal agency of the federal Department
of Transportation. Then, add a military component
through a regimental program and mandatory post-graduate
service in transportation industry and the Armed Forces.
Finally, package all of that into three, eleven-month residential
years and a fourth year at sea.
The
result is a dynamic organizational environment that is part
college, part military base, and part federal bureaucracy.
Meeting the needs of all three is both challenging and rewarding,
and helps make the United States Merchant Marine Academy
a great place to work and learn for midshipmen, faculty,
and staff.
