Health Services

The Department of Health Services is responsible for the overall management of the midshipman medical and dental care program.  Located in Patten Clinic, DHS provides full service care for midshipmen, as well as limited services for faculty and staff.  The department is under the leadership of an experienced medical administrator, assigned by the U.S. Public Health Service.  The administrator also serves as either the chief medical officer or the Academy dentist.  Other staff includes experienced physicians assistants, registered nurses, dental hygienists, and medical office personnel.  Some key services include:

  • 24-hour EMT coverage for midshipmen, faculty, staff, and visitors, through the student-run EMT program, with back-up provided by local emergency services
  • Full service midshipman medical coverage.  Clinic-level care and examination services are provided in-house.  More comprehensive services are provided on a contract basis by the North Shore University Hospital, part of the highly-respected North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System.
  • Full service midshipman dental coverage
  • Student counseling and personal development services
  • Full range of referral services
  • Drug testing (pre-Sea Year and pre-Licensing)
