

The Department
of Health Services is responsible for the overall management
of the midshipman medical and dental care program.
Located in Patten Clinic, DHS provides full service care
for midshipmen, as well as limited services for faculty
and staff. The department is under the leadership
of an experienced medical administrator, assigned by the
U.S. Public Health Service. The administrator also
serves as either the chief medical officer or the Academy
dentist. Other staff includes experienced physicians
assistants, registered nurses, dental hygienists, and
medical office personnel. Some key services include:

24-hour EMT coverage for midshipmen,
faculty, staff, and visitors, through the student-run
EMT program, with back-up provided by local emergency
services

Full service midshipman medical coverage.
Clinic-level care and examination services are
provided in-house. More comprehensive services
are provided on a contract basis by the North Shore
University Hospital, part of the highly-respected
North Shore
- Long Island Jewish Health System.
