National Maritime Hall of Fame
 For more than two decades, the Museum
houses the National Maritime Hall of Fame, the only such
permanent exhibit in the nation, which is dedicated to
recognizing and honoring the great people and great
ships of our maritime history. For almost two decades,
famous people and ships from our great maritime past
have been selected annually to be honored in the Hall.
A primary goal of the American Merchant Marine Museum is
to give national prestige and fame to these persons and
merchant vessels that are vital to the history of the
United States since Colonial times. All phases of the
maritime industry are represented in this Hall of Fame:
ship operation, ship building, maritime unions, maritime
museums, and other maritime-oriented fields. Over one
hundred ships and people have been honored.
Anyone can nominate a person or ship
to be considered for induction into the Hall. There are
criteria: the person must have been deceased or the ship
sunk or scrapped for at least five years before being
considered. Every effort is made to insure that all
segments of our nation's shipping industry (oceans,
coastwise shipping, inland waterways and Great Lakes)
are included. Only one person and one ship are inducted
into the Hall of Fame each year, except for the 2003
inductees which were the two last surviving Liberty
ships, both floating museums: JOHN W. BROWN and the
JEREMIAH O'BRIEN.
