Emery Rice
An Annex dedicated to the important
story of the marine engineering was established in 1986
in a new building off Steamboat Road near the Museum.
The centerpiece of the Museum Annex is the century old
steam engine from a famous square sail and steam
training vessel which, in its long history bore the
names NANTUCKET and EMERY RICE, among others. Carefully
restored to working condition by a team of dedicated
midshipmen volunteers, the engine has been designated a
National Historic Engineering Landmark by the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers, which cited it as "a
significant benchmark in the evolution of marine steam
power plants." The Emery Rice Exhibit is open on
Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
